The slam-bang, laugh-packed classic Hollywood western “Texas” (1941) focuses on the rivalry between two former friends from Virginia (William Holden, Glenn Ford) who are now on opposite sides of the law in the Lone Star State, and vie for the attention of a local beauty (Claire Trevor). George Marshall directs. Then, Ford and Holden reteam in “The Man from Colorado” (1948) as, respectively, a Colorado judge transformed by the Civil War into a raving sadist and an army friend trying to protect the town from his violence. In “Blazing Across the Pecos” (1948), Southwest Texas is a hard place to do a bad day's work when the Durango Kid (Charles Starrett) streaks in, with a gripe against all troublemakers. Co-stars Smiley Burnette and Chief Thundercloud. “Gun Fury” (1953) is a fine Raoul Walsh western thriller starring Rock Hudson as a Civil War vet who obsessively searches the Arizona wilderness when his fiancée (Donna Reed) is abducted by a crazed outlaw. Philip Carey, Lee Marvin also star. In the western favorite “The Black Dakotas” (1954), President Abraham Lincoln attempts to make peace with Sioux Indians so that he can transfer troops to the South to serve in the Civil War. With Gary Merrill, Wanda Hendrix. The tough frontier drama “They Came to Cordura” (1959) looks at the nature of heroism, with Gary Cooper as a soldier accused of cowardice in 1916, charged with finding five Medal of Honor candidates and bringing them to a military outpost. With Rita Hayworth, Van Heflin, Tab Hunter. And, finally, “J.W. Coop” (1971) is a compelling character study centering on a rodeo rider (Cliff Robertson), who leaves prison after a 10-year stint and struggles to get back to society and his livelihood. Cristina Ferrare, Geraldine Page, R.G. Armstrong co-star. 10 1/2 hrs. total on two discs. Standard/Widescreen; Soundtrack: English
