Andy Griffith bucks his nice guy image in this biting satire about the power of the media and the people who manipulate it, directed by Elia Kazan and written by Bud Schulberg. Griffith plays a drifter with the gift of gab who is discovered by a hungry TV producer played by Patricia Neal. As Griffith rises to national prominence, the folksy charmer reveals himself to be a megalomaniacal monster off-screen. Walter Matthau and Lee Remick round out the cast of this biting examination of the influence that popular culture has on the world at large.
