Directed by the great Sergio Leone, this 1964 western made Clint Eastwood an international film star and launched umpteen generations of imitators. Clint plays a gunfighting drifter ("The Man With No Name") who wanders into a lethal feud which he survives by playing each side off the other. Gian Maria Volonte and Wolfgang Lukschy co-star as rival gang-leaders and Marianne Koch is the woman in jeopardy. Movie buffs know the story is lifted from Akira Kurosawa's samurai classic "Yojimbo," but book buffs know (and Kurosawa has admitted) the tale actually originates with Dashiell Hammett's mystery, "The Glass Key."
