The True Story Of How One Man's Faith Uplifted A Nation

Considered one of the finest films to deal with religion, A Man Called Peter is the compelling story of Scottish minister Peter Marshall, who as a young man, traveled to Washington, D.C. and became the pastor of the church of the Presidents. By the time of his death, he was the chaplain to the Senate and a greatly respected man. Although he was a Presbyterian, the wisdom and sincerity of his sermons appealed to people of all faiths. Featuring outstanding performances by Richard Todd and Jean Peters, A Man Named Peter is also a touching love story, and received an Oscar® nomination for best Cinematography.

    Comments about this product:

This is a 1955 drama of the minister, Peter Marshall. Starring Richard Todd and Jean Peters.

I was confirmed in the Presbyterian Church. My minister was a gentle man whose Sunday sermons either taught or inspired the parishioners. At age 14, my minister retired and we got a new one. He was a bible thumper, repent you sinner! I couldn't remember one commandment that I violated, but asked for forgiveness. When the second and third Sunday passed, the message was still the same, I asked my parents if I could skip going to church and explained. Granted. I never went back. But, this movie, the minister called Peter, had words worth listening.

I found reviewers called Commernter77 of USA and Scheherzade of Beaufort, SC very interesting, please read.

Otherwise, this movie is very heart moving. Some of us need a reaffirmation of obeying morals and values. Others, need to be introduced to it, a lost nondenominational art of gathering others to listen to morals and values with media going crazy preaching opposite.

Peter was poor and his step-father did not want to support him. Peter earned his way through divinity school. Managed to earn enough for passage to America. Finally, got a post, and brought many more people to church than could be provided. Everybody liked him. Then, he got a post in Washington, DC. He faced a congregation of steeped in tradition. Peter was not going to be stopped in outreaching!

Meanwhile, the romance of his wife was enchanting. However, I think her portrayal of just housewife was probably too modest. A man doesn't reach for the stars with a drag on the collar. I never read his books.

Anyhow, even if atheist, this is still a good story. I guess I got long-winded, but I was impressed by this movie and glad to have it in my collection. Even if Peter teaches you one value, like respect for others, it is a miracle.

One of my favorite stories, I remember watching this movie as a teenager and being moved to be something better than what I was.. Knowing that a good deal of the story took place within a few miles of where I was living gave it even more reality.

              Comments about this product:

This film came out in the author, Catherine Marshall's lifetime, and we have her comments on it. She was overall very pleased. She considered that 20th Century Fox gave it a quality and credible handling. She thought Richard Todd did a fine job. She was, however, politely puzzled by the interpretation of herself by the actress, Jean Peters. Apparently, this was not a particularly welcome project for Ms. Peters, who gave no response to the usual functions and support of an actor for their picture, not attending the premier or anything of that nature. She resisted any friendly overtures from Mrs. Marshall while visiting the set during the filming, as the invited guest of the studio. All of this was opposite to the response of Mr. Todd, who was very gracious. Mrs. Marshall knew she had signed away her rights to affect the production, and did not attempt to interfere. Ms. Peters' portrayal was adequate as the young girl in love, but she was quite artificial in the marriage and ministry period. The boy who played the son was more alive and natural. She depicted Mrs. Marshall as either a simpering hanger-on or as sort of a weary worn, martyr type, who doggedly trudged through. If she read the book itself, she certainly missed the spark and proactive quality of the woman she was playing. Having read the book, along with others of Mrs. Marshall, I know that she was most enthusiastic and positive toward her life with Rev. Marshall and life in general. And, she was an active contributor. Her inner strength also won out as she faced her many personal challenges. If you have the interest, you might enjoy reading Catherine Marshall's book by the same name.
