Cameron Crowe's career as a 15-year-old Rolling Stone magazine writer is recounted in this fascinating semi-autobiographical 2001 film. Patrick Fugit as teen journalist William Miller launches on a road trip with Stillwater, wanna-be rock band stars, and the Band-Aids, their band of girl groupies. Against the advice of Philip Seymour Hoffman as the youngster's mentor and the legendary rock critic Lester Bangs, Miller befriends the band members on their wild romp around the country. Headed by Billy Crudup as the group's lead guitarist and including its insecure singer Jason Lee, thrilling concerts and backyard debacles abound as the teenager learns about the gritty and glittery sides of the road to rock stardom. Kate Hudson shines as Band-Aids' leader Penny Lane, and Frances McDormand is a stellar Elaine, Miller's protective mom. Reflecting the nostalgia and humor of an era, with bits of pop culture and musical history thrown in, this delightful film features a classic rock soundtrack with music from The Who and Elton John.
