On March 11, 1918, a Fort Riley, Kansas, private fell ill with a sore throat, fever and headache. Within a week, 500 soldiers were stricken. It soon spread to the civilian population, and thus began the worst epidemic in the history of the United States, documented here in "Influenza, 1918" (1998). Incorrectly called "The Spanish Influenza," it killed more than 675,000 people in this country before it disappeared almost as quickly as it began. PBS' award-winning "The American Experience" examines the fluso deadly that people who caught it could be healthy in the morning and dead by nightfall.
