Description
Filmediin Hawaii andiFilled With Excitement!

His friends call him Jim. His enemies call him trouble. And a vampy blonde calls him 76 - because "that's a lot of man."

All 6'4" of John Wayne plays the title role, a federal agent ferreting out subversives in Hawaii. Rallying to the cause are co-stars Nancy Olson and Veda Ann Borg. And 6'7" James Arness (when Wayne would later recommend to star on TV's Gunsmoke) is McLain's war-hero partner Baxter. The documentary-style story moves swiftly, with good-natured humor peppered throughout. Pre-statehood Hawaii locales range from elite resorts to a Shinto temple and from the sunken remains of the battleship Arizona to a Molokai leper colony. Give Big Jim McLain a big hand. Because that's a lot of movie.

A different kind of part for John Wayne, but very well acted. I enjoyed his interaction with James Arness.

          Comments about this product:

John Wayne is one of all-time favorite actors, but this is an average movie at best. Plot is simple and predictable. James Arness is his partner. John Wayne is the best part of this movie. I would recommend this movie to a friend, but with these comments.

              Comments about this product:

As expected, Duke played himself. The story line was pure propaganda from the McCarthy era anti-communist period of the 1950's. This was more of a documentary than a detective story. I'm sorry, but, I was disappointed.

                Comments about this product:

A politically incorrect and anachronistic film with John Wayne and Jim Arness starring as two undercover agents of the House Un-American Activities Committee--so during the heyday of the Joseph McCarthy inquisition directed at American communists. Formulaic spy film of the period. A fair amount of John Wayne's bigger-than-life fun actually, especially since we are treated to views of pre-statehood Hawaii. This was perhaps the first of Wayne's über-patriotic films, such as "Green Berets," which would again offend the liberal community in Hollywood. No wonder this film has slipped between the cracks of Wayne's body of works.
