This explosive work about the conflict between the spirit and the flesh is the epitome of the sensuous style of filmmakers Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger (I Know Where I'm Going!, The Red Shoes). A group of nuns - played by some of Britain's best actresses, including Deborah Kerr (From Here To Eternity, An Affair To Remember), Flora Robson (The Rise Of Catherine The Great, Wuthering Heights), and Jean Simmons (Great Expectations, Hamlet) - struggles to establish a convent in the snowcapped Himalayas; isolation, extreme weather, altitude, and culture clashes all conspire to drive the well-intentioned missionaries mad. A darkly grand film that won Oscars for its set design and for its cinematography by Jack Cardiff (The Red Shoes, The African Queen), Black Narcissus is one of the greatest achievements by two of cinema's true visionaries.

    Comments about this product:

I want to point out that the description of this movie on the website is incorrect. It implies that all of the missionaries are driven mad. This is not true. All of the nuns are not driven mad. I recommend you watch this movie and find out what really happens....and if you are not interested in dramas about human behavior and its breaking point, please watch this movie to experience truly realistic looking scenery created before computers. Enjoy!

      Comments about this product:

I only saw this movie a few months ago for the first time. I was swept away. The cinematography, the characters, the story everything about this movie captured me. It was so compelling that I could not look away for even a moment. Being religious and female, Black Narcissus spoke volumes to me about women who had to struggle to keep their vows in contrast with women who are devout. In addition, men may find this movie an interesting window into the hearts of such women.
