Sidney Poitier stars as Buck, in "Buck and The Preacher" (1972), an ex-Army wagon-master. It's just after the Civil War and he is helping newly freed slaves travel to the west from Louisiana. Taking African-Americans from the Deep South isn't a simple task. Cameron Mitchell co-stars and tries to stop Sydney Poitier from taking and leading the group. Harry Belafonte also stars as the swindling preacher who joins Buck in protecting the slaves. "Buck and The Preacher" is Sydney Poitier's directorial debut and he passes the test with flying colors. Cool, jazzy music and unexpected wit all add up to very interesting viewing, and gives a very clear message of hope.
