Gambling can mean the difference between life and death in this "Casino" (1995). The inner workings of a corrupt Las Vegas casino are exposed in director Martin Scorsese's brilliant story of crime and punishment. Robert De Niro plays Sam "Ace" Rothstein, the Jewish front man for one of the mob's premiere Vegas casinos in the 1970s. Joined by strongman Joe Pesci as Nicky Santoro, the casino runs smoothly until gorgeous Sharon Stone (in her only Oscar-nominated performance) turns up, romances Rothstein andjinxes their winning streak. As drugs and alcohol and greed begin to rule their lives, all three are eventually brought down by their base desires in one of Scorsese's most visually exciting movies.
