"Champagne for Caesar" (1950) is a wildly funny story of revenge. Ronald Colman stars as a genius who is rebuffed for a job by the president of a soap company, played by Vincent Price. Out for revenge, Colman enters a game show sponsored by the company, and in answering every question correctly, threatens to bankrupt them with his prize money. Celeste Holm and Barbara Britton co-star in this comedic romp directed by Richard Whorf.

      Comments about this product:

I bought this DVD as a gift for my husband. He is a huge Vincent Price fan, but is only familiar with the latter part of his career. I wanted to acquaint him with the diverse roles he played prior to making his foray into horror films. The plot is completely crazy (as is Price's character - who steals every scene in which he appears), which is what you'd expect from a screwball comedy. This film was made several years after the heyday of the genre, but I feel it qualifies as an excellent screwball comedy. Colman gives an excellent performance. He's funny while he's trying hard to be serious (at least his character is). Celeste Holm is great as the Mata Hari type who falls for her mark (Coleman). Art Linkletter plays the quiz show host to perfection. This film, like many screwball comedies, has a large cast which helps create confusion and allow the plot's insanity to unfold as though this has been expected from the start.

Vincent Price pulls out all the stops and Ronald Coleman and the rest of the cast assist him.

            Comments about this product:

Ronald Coleman is a brilliant man who can't get a job because nobody wants to hire a know-it-all. After he gets bounded from a soap company he gets on their game show with a diabolical plan to use that show to bankrupt and take over the company.

Vincent Price is fall down funny as the soap company's head executive, his funniest film!

Celeste Holm is the brainy vamp Price and company engage to draw Coleman off his game.

Art Linkletter (!) is the game show host who tries to romance Coleman's sister and further distract him.

And Caesar is Coleman's pet parrot voiced by Mel Blanc.

Fast moving film strong on satire. Bogs down a bit in the middle but picks up again at the end. Odd note: the game show is radio, but the grand finale is television. matter of the times it was made as radio was still king, but TV was moving up fast.

Hard to call this under rated as nobody remembers it at all, but catch it and enjoy a sharp, breezy comedy.
