The first mainstream feature debut from legendary filmmaker and Academy Award Winner Francis Ford Coppola, "Dementia 13" (1963) darkly weaves a macabre tale. Troubled couple Louise (Luana Anders) and John argue over his mother's will during a midnight rowboat at his family's Irish castle, where they have gathered for the annual memorial service of John's late sister. When John has a heart attack, Louise pushes his body into the lake, knowing that she'll never see a penny of the inheritance if it is learned that John passed before his mother. She hatches a plan to drive Lady Haloran insane by making her believe her dead daughter has returned, but soon an axe-wielding visitor hacks the plan to pieces. A triumph of artistic ingenuity over budget, this sinister slasher gives an early glimpse at the filmmaker's obsession with greed and family dysfunction. Produced by Roger Corman.
