One of Sam Peckinpah's most understated films, "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid" (1973) manages to romanticize and eulogize both the old West and '60s counterculture. James Coburn stars as the outlaw-turned-lawman reluctantly hunting down his old friend, Billy the Kid, played by Kris Kristofferson. As they get closer to their final confrontation, both men realize that their free-wheeling way of life is ending. Though not as emblematic as "The Wild Bunch," "Pat Garrett" stands as one of Peckinpah's finest. This 2-disc set includes the expanded Director's Cut of the film with film commentary by Peckinpah's biographers.
