Olivia de Havilland was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in this drama about a young woman with a seemingly perfect life who finds herself committed to a mental institution. After suffering bouts of confusion and violent outbursts, she is sent to Juniper Hill State Hospital to be treated for her apparent schizophrenia. The harsh conditions and de Havilland's fearless portrayal of the character's pain and disorientation are stunning for a film of this era.
