Description
In one of his favorite roles, screen legend Gregory Peck plays the valiant Napoleonic Era naval hero in this swashbuckling saga adapted for the screen by Hornblower's creator C.S. Forester. True to the famed source novels, Hornblower outthinks his rivals to outfight them. He's unflinching under fire, modest in victory - and more than a little at sea romantically with Lady Barbara Wellesley (Virginia Mayo).

Director Raoul Walsh (White Heat, High Sierra) guides the broadside-for-broadside action with flourishes befitting sea warfare's most exciting era. Two fully-rigged and three nearly complete ships - from a 38-gun frigate to a 100-gun command ship - are used in the film. Fire when ready, mates!

          Comments about this product:

Spoiler alert: the plot's ending was a little too contrived, with Hornblower's wife meeting her death in childbirth and the Admiral's death freeing Virginia Mayo's character so that the guy gets the gal. But what the heck. Guy gets Virginia Mayo? Girl gets Gregory Peck? It all went down well in my audience. Greatly enjoyed this film, not a dull moment. The bombardment scenes were quite exciting, much better effects that I expected for the time.

            Comments about this product:

This is superb adventure movie. Although, I have not read C.S. Forester, I feel sure is authentic to the story. Gregory Peck gave an wonderful performance. Hollywood out did itself for creating scenery for 1950 and filming the ships and battles.

The story starts on the west side of South America after leaving England on a secret mission without a port for replenishing supplies. The crew is getting anxious for food.

They arrive exactly when the captain said. The shipment to a dictator is questionable. His is now "El Supremo" and crazy with power. But Peck stands his ground, provision the ship first and second get your arms shipment.

Meanwhile, a Spanish War ship is just beyond the peninsula. Peck secretly attacks and overtakes this magnificent warship. Peck accidentally gives the ship to "El Supremo".

Another ship approaches, it contains messages and female passengers. England is now aligned with Spain. The passengers are women, one is a titled Lady and her maid. This is Virginia Mayo trying to escape the Yellow Fever breakout. "Ah hum room!" is said by the Captain.

Now, to take away the big gun ship in S.A. away from "El Supremo". What a breathe-taking scene and witty use of seamanship to out-maneuver the ships in battle.
Peck was the winner of 38 guns versus 100 guns! Mayo volunteers as nurse to the wounded.

Later, Mayo falls severely ill. Peck enforces quarantine. He is included, so nurses Mayo and demands medical books from his cabin. Mayo recovers.

Then follows a light romance. Peck is married. Mayo is engaged to a powerful titled Lord. They are very proper except for one stolen kiss. This occurs on the way home to England.

During the long trip away, many things have changed on the home front.

I invite to watch the ending. Will Peck extricate himself from charges of "El Supremo" interactions? Will Mayo's Lord fiance get off his back for endangering her during battle? Will Mayo and Peck ever see each other again?

This is a lovely movie taking place in the Napoleonic Era. I loved it. I hope you do too.

A masterfully written, filmed and performed adventure on the high seas. Gregory Peck at his dashing best as the title character. Did he ever make a truly bad movie? Very entertaining and worthy of a place in your video collection.

This is a highly entertaining movie that has been a favorite of mine for many years. It has action, adventure, romance, humor, and more! Gregory Peck as Captain Horatio Hornblower, a British Naval Officer during the Napoleonic wars, gives a rousing performance as the humble yet assertive Hornblower. Virginia Mayo, in the leading lady role, is beautiful and fiery. She once said in an interview that Gregory Peck was the best kisser she had ever encountered in her film career. Knowing that alone would make me want to watch this film!

In a modern world of Computer Graphic movies, I was impressed with the lengths the Producers went to in order to portray the Royal Navy, in the era of the Napoleanic Wars.
