Description
The Palazzo Vecchio. The Uffizi Gallery. Michelangelo’s David. Meg Johnson is eager to discover the glories of Italy with her beautiful daughter Clara, who was mentally impaired in a childhood accident. But Clara discovers something more – love – with an ardent Italian who mistakes her limitations for charming naiveté. Clara is so happy and fulfilled. Should Margaret reveal her daughter’s secret? Sensitive and elegantly romantic, Light in the Piazza is an A-list production with a fine cast headed by two-time Oscar® winner* Olivia de Havilland, a script by Casablanca’s Julius J. Epstein, gowns by Christian Dior and color cinematography celebrating the magnificent art and architecture of Florence and Rome. Rossano Brazzi, Yvette Mimieux, George Hamilton and Barry Sullivan also star in this moving story that was also the basis for the award-winning 2005 Broadway musical.

      Comments about this product:

Among the popular American "lady goes to Italy and finds romance" melodramss especially of the 50s and 60s, Light in the Piazza (MGM 1962) is arguably the best. For example, compare Piazza to very entertaining, better known Three Coins in the Fountain (Fox 1954). Olivia de Havilland, Yvette Mimieux (superb) vs. Dorothy McGuire et al. (engaging). Deeper, moving story line vs. light-hearted fluff and romance. And Rossano Brazzi at his best vs. standard, charming Brazzi. Ah, suave, debonair Rossano. What would these films have done without him? Not only did he star in Fountain and Piazza, but similarly in: The Barefoot Contessa (Ava Gardner), Summertime (Katherine Hepburn), Interlude (June Allyson), The Story of Esther Costello (Joan Crawford), A Certain Smile (Joan Fontaine), Count Your Blessings (Deborah Kerr), Rome Adventure (Susanne Pleshette), better forgotten The Bobo (Britt Ekland). Whew! Enough to sweep the ladies hankering after romantic Sturm und Drang completely off their feet! To get back to Light in the Piazza: among all these Brazzi heart-throbbers, it's the best, Summertime with Hepburn running a close second. Light in the Piazza is thoroughly enjoyable, great soap. Don't miss it.
