When Nazi troops seize his town, timid schoolmaster Albert Lory (Charles Laughton) submits to his new masters, although he cannot help but be inspired by the defiance of many of his fellow citizens. Then Albert is hauled before a tribunal, falsely accused of murder. Standing alone against the power of the Third Reich, this seemingly weak man then reveals an invincible soul. Three of cinema’s most acclaimed talents – Laughton, director Jean Renoir (Grand Illusion) and screenwriter Dudley Nichols (Stagecoach) -- unite for this moving portrait of the heroism of everyday men and women. The stellar cast includes Maureen O’Hara (Laughton’s protégée and his The Hunchback of Notre Dame costar) as the colleague he secretly loves, George Sanders as a covert collaborator, and Walter Slezak as a wily Nazi officer who holds Albert’s fate in his hands. “A courageous film…a story cleanly and maturely told” (Bosley Crowther, The New York Times).

    Comments about this product:

I adore this powerful WWII drama. This country (never identified) is occupied the German Third Reich.

Mama's boy, about forty, loves his fellow school teacher (Charles Laughton and Maureen O'Hara), about twenty. His mother (Una O'Connor), pampers this man into a boy, she will not let go under any circumstances. Meanwhile, Maureen is engaged to George Sanders. He has capitulated to the new regime, but keeps it a secret.

Maureen's brother (Kent Smith) is an underground fighter by destroying valuable German shipments. He even loses his sweetheart because he is willing to be a double-agent, nice to the Germans in public and nasty behind their backs.

Then, Maureen too loses faith in Sanders when the Germans had invaded her home. She was entertaining Charles, fellow teacher, for the first time to dinner. Then her bother arrives looking disheveled. Look normal as the Germans arrive! Laughton coughs over his first cigarette. Hey, you anti-smokers; it was acceptable then, considered unacceptable if refused (culture change), Laughton boy wanted his first!

Beforehand, had demonstrated his cowardice by crying into his mother's arms in front of his students in the bomb shelter. Then the school principle gets arrested
for having books considered unacceptable. Laughton is devastated by losing his leader.

Then Laughton is arrested for some reason. His mother is going crazy! But, the experiences that he felted by neighbors rising him to strength. He witlessness his principles' death from jail cell. He gets very persuasive suggestions from a German official (Walter Slezak). Even I almost fell for them!

Then, his trial. Please watch his new hero! Charles charming voice at his best! He admits he loves Maureen. He admits that his mother was purchasing from the black market for his comfort. He refuses to admit to the Germans of crime. What a star!

I may have given the end away, but it is so powerful. This is a must see.

      Comments about this product:

This is one of my favorite films. Being a teacher and having gone through censorship battles, I know how valuable -- and threatening to fascists --the written word and knowledge can be. This film rings true very nearly 100%.
