Description
“Bette Davis gives a sharp, vital interpretation of Miss Moffat (the spinster teacher fighting to educate the poor children of a Welsh mining village)…by remaining true to its legitimate stage counterpart,” said the Herald Tribune. The story, based on Emlyn Williams’ autobiographical play, focuses on the relationship between Miss Moffat and her gifted young prodigy from the mines, Morgan Evans (John Dall). “Consumed by inward fire, by the sheer joy of imparting knowledge” (London Picture Post), she molds him into a legitimate candidate for an Oxford scholarship in the remarkably short span of two years. Despite the disaster of Morgan’s seduction by trouble-making Bessie (Joan Lorring), the mutual struggle between teacher and pupil becomes a glorious triumph of the human spirit.

“Only Bette Davis…could have combated so successfully the obvious intention of the adaptors of the play to make frustrated sex the mainspring of the plot,” observed Picture Post.

    Comments about this product:

I bought this film the very minute it became available on VHS and now, at long last, on DVD. The talent of Bette Davis is, once again, displayed so amply in this film it is difficult to find a flaw. If there is one surely it must be that when the closing tiles appear, one wants more...more of the story, more of Morgan Evans and much, much more of Bette Davis as Miss Moffat or any other character she cares to play! She was perfect in this role and at the right age to play the spinster acadamian more than adequately. She shines in every scene and every momment she is on-screen she offers us insight into the heart and soul of a woamn who is extraordinary in her vision, quite ahead of her time and, in spite of the odds arrayed against it, finds a way, in the man's world of a Welsh mining town in the late 1800's, to successfully bring her young student to the brink of personal awakening and triumph through thoughtful perseverence and a love of knowledge. John Dall, in his screen debut as Morgan Evans and Joan Lorring as Bessie Watty were both nominated for Academy Awards for their splendid performances. Rys Williams, Nigel Bruce, Mildres Dunnock and Rosalind Ivan back this production with solid and lively portrayals in their supporting roles.
