Description
Edna Ferber’s classic tale of life and love among a theatrical troupe on a Mississippi riverboat has received many dramatic treatments since its birth over eighty years ago. But none is more satisfying than this 1936 production, widely accepted as the best and most faithful of three screen versions of the Jerome Kern-Oscar Hammerstein II musical. A splendid, indeed definitive cast features Irene Dunne as the lovely Magnolia, fated to fall for Allan Jones’ dashing riverboat gambler, Gaylord Ravenal. It is their turbulent romance and Magnolia’s growth from a shy guileless girl to a mature star of the stage that form the core of the story. In her last film appearance, Helen Morgan will break your heart as the tragic Julie, with her songs “Bill” and “Can’t Help Lovin’ That Man.” And there is perhaps no more memorable performance in musical history than Paul Roberson’s moving rendition of “Ol’ Man River.”

    Comments about this product:

Great version Much better than the Keel/Grayson version. Irene Dunne and Allan Jones are great together. This version gives more information and is closer to the original story. Irene Dunne is one of my favorite actresses. She had a lovely voice, could dance, do drama and comedy. Very underrated actress

          Comments about this product:

Even my 12 year old daughter enjoyed this version better than the Howard Keel version. The songs flow with the story line sepecially "Old Man River". Alan Jones as Gay Ravenal is very likeable. Irene Dunne is good as Magnolia. Jones' duets with Irene Dunne are sweet. The ending of the story is much better.
In the newer version Julie look so trashy in Chicago and on the river. The character of Julie in the newer version gives the impression she's nothing but a drunk and prostitute after Steve leaves her where this version she's protrayed as a respectable drunk who's dealing with her man walking out on her. Guess Ava Gardner needed to show skin in the newer version.
If you're caught up in being PC you won't like this movie because in "Old Man River they are called darkies. If you want to see a younger Mammy from Gone with the Wind you'll see her here. The actor who plays Joe has a nice bass voice. He's protrayed as slow but very devoted to his woman.
Furthermore, I always disliked the ending with the Howard Keel version when meeting Kim for the first time he asks her to make believe he is her daddy. She said she'd "make believe" and was too mushy for a first time speaking with a stranger. The message in those days,60's was and still is, for little children" Don't talk to strangers" If Howard Keel was supposed to be so in love with his wife yet he never kept track of them is a little difficult to swallow where Alan Jones isn't with his wife and family but he keeps tabs on them and their success.
Only thing disappointing as far as make up was Magnolia and Gay looked older than her parents towards the end. Also missed the cute skit in the newer version done by Shultz & Shultz on New Years Eve.

              Comments about this product:

I'm a great lover of films from Hollywood's classic period and particularly MGM in the 1930s. This version is the truest to the 1927 Broadway show with a couple of the original actors reprising their roles - Charles Winninger and Helen Morgan. Songs that were taken out of the Broadway show due to running time have been put into this film and a new song by Kern & Hammerstein was written especially for this production. This film is also truest to Ferber's book as it carries the characters into the 20th century and gives us a glimpse of daughter Kim. This is classic Broadway and classic Hollywood at it's best - Enjoy!

Far better than the 1951 version. The color is breathtaking and it adheres to the original show. One of the best musicals for the entire family. Show Boat was way ahead of its time teaching racial tolerance.
