Description
Any Johnny Reb who tries to escape the Union prison outpost at Fort Bravo faces the unforgiving Arizona Territory desert stretching before him... and the even more unforgiving pursuit of Bravo's resolute Captain Roper. Yet there's a common foe that may unite the Civil War rivals: the fierce Mescalero horsemen waging guerilla war against Blue and Gray alike.

William Holden portrays tough-minded Roper in a Western acclaimed for its scenic vistas (shot in Death Valley) and for sequences that showed a major action filmmaker was on the rise. John Sturges directs, setting the taut, rugged tone for The Great Escape, The Magnificent Seven and more hits to come.

    Comments about this product:

If you enjoy a good Western, or "Oater", this is a good choice! Eleanor Parker and William Holden are wonderful for the leads in this tale, that is not so far from Historical truth!
What better place to hold prisoners of war than in the middle of a desert? During the Civil War, they actually did, not sure they had one in Arizona, but they did move them to the western territories to give them the feeling of the finality of their position, that getting back to the war was hopeless. This is where the originality of the movie comes in! Sending a woman (Eleanor Parker) to aid in their escape was entirely "left-field thinking"! Very original.
The visual Effects, I thought, were wonderful! If you have ever been to the deserts of Arizona and Utah, you know they can seem so barren and bleak. The Director and photographers really earned their pay, in that they were able to capture the hills and surrounding mountains in all their glory. At one point, toward the end, a rain storm must have been building up because you could see the clouds and mixture of colors in the background, this was cinema magic! I'm sure they saw the build up coming, and wanted to use it for the very purpose it was, but, I have to wonder: How long was it between the shooting of this scene and the ensuing deluge?
The character development was a little lacking. John Forsythe was the intended love interest of Eleanor Parker, with William Holden as the intended "patsy". The one who was supposed to believe she was interested in him only to discover he was being played for a fool, but when John's character finds out she really did fall for Holden, everybody just rolled over. To be honest, it's difficult to show much jealousy when a large group of Apache warriors are out to kill you! Just goes to show you: When it comes to a really good Western, you have to choose, either a love story, or a good "oater"! Thankfully, they chose the later!
