George Romero’s sophomore feature was the comedy/drama “There’s Always Vanilla” (1971), following the romantic foibles of an immature drifter (Raymond Laine) who comes home to Pittsburgh and takes up a foredoomed relationship with an older spokesmodel (Judith Ridley). Bored with her dull life and unhappy marriage, a suburban housewife meets with a tarot-reading neighbor and becomes obsessed with using witchcraft to get what she wants. Are her occult powers real, or has she fallen into madness? The creepy blend of feminism, black magic, and murder “Season of the Witch” (1972) stars Jan White, Laine, Ann Muffly. A military plane crashes near a small Pennsylvania town, infecting the local water supply with an experimental virus that turns the residents into deranged killers. The government’s efforts to quarantine the area and send in the army for "cleanup" propels “The Crazies” (1973). Lane Carroll, W.G. McMillan, Lynn Lowry star. 5 hrs. total on 3 Blu-rays/3 DVDs.
