"Glory" (1989) is based on the letters of Robert Gould Shaw, and based on the book Lay This Laurel by Lincoln Kirstein. Also influenced by the book One Gallant Rush by Peter Burchard, "Glory" portrays the Union soldiers of the Civil War and the formationof the first black regiment. The 54th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry fights against the Confederate army while Lincoln is on the brink of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.
