"Go for Broke!" (1953) reveals a lesser-known episode from World War II through the exploits of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, which was primarily comprised of Japanese-Americans. Van Johnson stars as a prejudiced lieutenant unexpectedly placed in command of the 442nd, who gradually grows to respect the Japanese-American soldiers as they battle across Italy and Germany. Lane Nakano, who plays a wise sergeant, was one of many cast members who actually served with the 442nd. "Go For Broke!" earned Oscar nominations for Best Story and Screenplay.
