A Conversation with Philip Kaufman
Facets Cine-Notes Collectible Booklet™
Philip Kaufman's feature film debut, "Goldstein" (1963) showcases an early American independent cinematic voice. This is the avant-garde fable of a mysterious old man (Lou Gilbert) who crawls out of Lake Erie. Based on the life of the prophet Elijah and shot on location in Chicago, legendary filmmaker Jean Renoir hailed the film as the "best American movie I've seen in 20 years." Improvisation and comedy aficionados will revel in the appearance of the legendary Del Close and other original players from Second City. "Goldstein" shared the 1964 Prix de la Nouvelle Critique.
