This hilarious wartime satire features an Academy Award-nominated screenplay by director Preston Sturges. "Hail The Conquering Hero" (1945) tells the story of Woodrow, played by Eddie Bracken, the first man in his small town to enlist at the start of World War II. Unfortunately, his hay fever lands him an immediate discharge, and rather than go home to face his friends and family, he pretends to be fighting overseas while working in a San Diego shipyard. During a chance encounter at a bar, Woodrow befriends a group of marines who decide to make him a hometown hero, but things quickly escalate beyond their control. Hilarity ensues as the townspeople learn the truth about their hero.
