Kenneth Branagh's 1996 film adaptation of William Shakespeare's most famous tragedy is the first to employ the entire text, uncut and unabridged. Branagh cast himself in the title role and moved the action of this timeless story of murder, deception and revenge into the 19th century. With an eclectic group of actors, he mixed veteran Shakespearean performers such as John Mills, Judi Dench, John Gielgud, and Derek Jacobi with Hollywood stars, including Robin Williams, Charlton Heston, Billy Crystal, and Jack Lemmon. Unlike others, this interpretation relies heavily on the female performances: Kate Winslet plays Ophelia and Julie Christie is Gertrude.
