After his spaghetti-Western phase, Clint Eastwood starred in this dusty, violent tale of the Old West, directed by Ted Post in capable style. Eastwood plays Cooper, an ex-lawman turned rancher who is wrongly accused of cattle rustling. Vigilantes lynch him and leave him for dead, but Cooper survives and sets out with revenge on his mind. It's a who's who of character actors like Ed Begley Sr., Ben Johnson, Charles McGraw, L.Q. Jones and Alan Hale Jr., with Bruce Dern turning in a suitably bug-eyed performance as a psychotic villain.
