This stunning, classic film is a scathing denouncement of feudal authority and hypocrisy. Winner of the 1963 Cannes Film Festival's Special Jury Prize, "Harakiri" (1962) tells the story of an aging samurai attempting to retain his honor. In 17th century Japan, a shift in political power has made the Shogun system useless. Impoverished samurai wander the countryside, asking wealthy estate owners if they can commit hara-kiri, a grisly form of suicide, on their property, assuming that the wealthy patron will offer food or shelter. This samurai's request uncovers a dark secret in the wealthy man's past.
