Overview

1943 was a very good year for Frank Sinatra. It was the year he became a true phenomenon in American music and appeared in his first starring role in a film, Higher and Higher, playing a very close facsimile of himself - a rich kid named Frankie who sings. The song "I Couldn't Sleep a Wink Last Night" - which had been specially tailored to Sinatra's vocal style by composer Jimmy McHugh - was nominated for an Academy Award, and McHugh would go on to become one of Sinatra's favorite songwriters. Variety noted that the movie was "light in vein but rich in comedy and song values."
