One of the most beautiful and intimate films about life, death and legacy. From master filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, comes "Ikiru" (1952), a look at one man's life as he comes to terms with his own mortality. Starring Kurosawa favorite Takashi Shimura, the film follows his character, an everyday office worker, as he learns he is terminally ill and has less than a year to live. Armed with this new knowledge, the man goes on a mission to put meaning to his life, and make sure that his last days are not spent in waste as he feels the rest of his life was. Exploring the city and night life, the man has many chance encounters that bring him closer to his goal. The title translated into English means "To Live," and in essence, despite the man's ultimate demise, the film is a mediation on life and making the most of it. Film critic Roger Ebert has called it, "Kurosawa's greatest film."
