It hasn't been such a wonderful life for an office clerk with a fatal diagnosis in auteur Akira Kurosawa's compelling drama "Ikiru (Essential Art House)" (1952). Realizing his whole life has been wasted following the inconsequential and petty rules of his job, one man takes the opportunity of his last days to make a difference for those he's leaving behind. Kurosawa's unconventional narrative is masterfully handled, and the ultimately inspirational theme has been compared favorably to Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946).

    Comments about this product:

I saw this film on TCM, so I don't know if that means it was free. But it has enriched my life, and so I was shopping for the film. The general theme is an example of living a meaningful life (the title translates as "to live." The film has an upbeat tone as it tells its story, and some very serious and sad scenes are conveyed with irony and almost humor. It is difficult to compare this to another film. It is truly touching and even inspiring.
