Fannie Hurst's acclaimed novel of racial identity and family ties is given not one, but two, stellar film adaptations paired here in the 2-disc "Imitation of Life: Two-Movie Special Edition." In 1934, silent-era star Claudette Colbert shines in her performance as a woman whose friendship with African-American business partner Louise Beavers deepens over the years, even as their relationships with their daughters grow more strained over issues of identity and romance. Director Douglas Sirk gave the material a more melodramatic interpretation with his hugely popular 1959 version, starring Lana Turner, Juanita Moore and Sandra Dee.
