Ismail Merchant directs his first feature film in this sardonic commentary on modern Indian culture adapted from Anita Desai's Booker Prize-nominated novel. "In Custody" (1994) stars Om Puri as a professor at a small college in India, who is ecstatic at the prospect of interviewing his idol, a famous Urdu poet played by Shashi Kapoor. The professor is in for more than a few unwelcome surprises when he actually encounters his hero, who is not at all what he expected.
