In one of their most elegant entertainments, director James Ivory, producer Ismail Merchant and writer Ruth Prawer Jhabvala depict the rivalry between two very different theatre directors vying to stage a long lost play by Jane Austen. Self-styled guru Robert Powell ("Jesus of Nazareth") envisions an avant-garde production starring a young innocent (Sean Young, in her film debut) he's stolen from her husband. His former mentor and lover, Oscar®-winner Anne Baxter, sees it as grand opera, and won't hesitate to undermine his cult-like grip on his troupe to win the script for herself.
