Based on true events, "K-19: The Widowmaker" (2002) follows the harrowing, ill-fated maiden voyage of a Russian nuclear submarine. This was 1961, the height of the Cold War when the Soviets and US were trying to outdo themselves with military superiority. Unfortunately, that rush to "power" had unintended consequences. K-19 was not ready for deployment, but that didn't stop the brave sailors from following orders. When radiation begins leaking, the captain (Harrison Ford) is left with few options. Liam Neeson co-stars in a taut drama directed by Kathryn Bigelow ("The Hurt Locker," 2008).
