Kiju Yoshida: Love + AnarchismBlu-ray
Director Yoshishige “Kiju” Yoshida’s magnum opus, “Eros + Massacre” (1969), offers parallel narratives between the short, turbulent life of early 20th century anarchist Sakae Osugi (Toshiyuki Hosokawa) and a pair of contemporary college students (Toshiko Ii, Daijirô Harada) immersing themselves in his theories. Mariko Okada, Yûko Kusunoki also star; presented in both its 169 min. theatrical version and 3 2/3 hrs. director’s cut.
An engineer and his wife are confronted by a young woman who claims to be his daughter--and he, in turn, must confront the ghosts of his militant youth--in Yoshida’s “Heroic Purgatory” (1970). Kaizo Kamoda, Mariko Okada, Kazumi Tsutsui star.
Lastly, Yoshida offers a colorful biopic of Ikki Kita (Rentarô Mikuni), the intellectual whose writings inspired young military officers to a failed 1936 takeover--the aftermath of which included his own summary execution--in “Coup d’Etat” (1973). Yasuyo Matsumura, Kazunaga Tsuji also star.
