Hailed by the New York Times as "the nation's least known great filmmaker and most gifted black director," Charles Burnett was deeply influential in the Black Independent Movement. "Killer of Sheep" (1977) examines the 1970s black working class life in anurban ghetto of Los Angeles. Stan grows increasingly numb from the drudgery of his life as a slaughterhouse worker, as explored through brief vignettes balancing disillusionment with finding joy in simple pleasures of life. This national treasure was only recently restored in 2007. Disc also includes both the original 1983 and the 2007 Director's Cut version of "My Brother's Wedding," a tragic comedy where a man with low ambition struggles to choose between his brother's middle-class world and the working-class existence of his best friend.
