A sweeping love story of a doomed affair. Monica Vitti stars as Vittoria, a beautiful woman who, in the opening scene of the movie, dumps her boring boyfriend Riccardo. She then begins an affair with a powerful, handsome, emotionally vacant stockbroker portrayed by ridiculously handsome Alain Delon. As their relationship heats up, director Michelangelo Antonioni uses vivid images, long silences and gorgeous shots of Rome to signify their lack of real emotional connection. This is the third in Antonioni's acclaimed series of early Sixties films that explore man's disconnection in the modern age.
