This special double feature showcases two versions of one of the greatest dramas ever told. The acclaimed novel of Victor Hugo's is again in the spotlight with this beautifully acted and superbly directed screen adaptation, "Les Miserables" (1935). Against all odds, the epitome of an underdog, Valjean (Frederic March) is an ex-convict who fights the good fight and raises his stakes until he becomes mayor of the city. Of course, Javert (Charles Laughton) is the well-played nemesis of Valjean, who vows to not stop until the ex-convict is behind bars once again. In this visionary version of "Les Miserables" (1952), Michael Rennie plays Jean Valjean, the ex-convict who tries his best to remake his life, and succeeds, becoming the mayor of his city. With a great cast of supporting characters including Robert Newton, Edmund Gwenn, Sylvia Sidney, Elsa Lanchester and more, this movie promises to be just as lovable, and just as much of a tear-jerker, as the original movie or the book from which they both descend from.
