Lt. Colonel Raspeguy (Anthony Quinn) takes his command very seriously for two reasons: First, it's his sworn duty. Second, Countess De Clairefons (Michele Morgan) has promised to marry him if he comes back from the war as a general. So Raspeguy has to get his squad into shape. Included in this band of brothers is Esclavier (Alain Delon) who ends up deserting the unit over the senselessness of the war, and Boisfeuras (Maurice Ronet) who likes killing the enemy way too much. Lots of action is in store as Raspeguy tries to hold it all together.
