Description
The tormented genius that was Vincent Van Gogh left behind masterworks that forever changed the world of art. Director Vincent Minnelli incorporates many visual elements inspired by the artist into "Lust for Life" (1956), his stirring biopic about the conflicted and destructive painter who still managed to see a world of beauty like no other. Kirk Douglas won a Golden Globe for his memorable portrayal of Van Gogh, and Anthony Quinn is superb as Paul Gauguin, in this exquisite exploration of the heights and depths of making art.

      Comments about this product:

This is a 1956 biography of painter Vincent Van Gogh. Kirk Douglas portrayed him, plus looking very much like him. Kirk gave a brilliant performance. He is my favorite artist of centuries ago; he captured a picture with emotion, movement and vibrancy. I had "Starry Night" picture on my dorm wall 45 years ago.

This was was a very tormented man who wanted love and friendship. But, he drove people crazy with his behavior! Kirk should have won an Oscar, but they gave it to Anthony Quinn as Paul Gauguin, who painted like a child.

I particularly liked that the movie shows many of his paintings, plus capturing his life and personality. I think this movie should not be missed in watching, even if not collecting it. Would somebody in qualified psychology comment, what did he suffer? Cutting off an ear shows that he was disturbed.

        Comments about this product:

The title was sort of misleading, as I am very familiar with Van Gogh through reading a composite of his leters. 'Lust for Life' indicates joy - and this artist's life was anything but.

This film is a classic and the role that made Kirk Douglas famous. Director Vincente Minelli generously and thoughtfully shows original Van Gogh paintings throughout the film. A masterpiece.

            Comments about this product:

I have shared w/other artist friends and we all enjoyed knowing more about this wonderful painter. My granddaughter studied him in school 3rd grade, and she knew Starry Starry Night immediately! The film made me enjoy McLean's song so much more. Van Gogh truly suffered for his art. I never knew about the epileptic diagnosis. It was all handled with class and compassion!

                Comments about this product:

Good screenplay contains the essentials of the biography, without being overly detailed. Douglas has the perfect quality of intensity and amazing physical resemblance to Van Gogh that makes this film doubly fascinating. Excellent cinematography puts the artist's vision straight into the eyes of the viewer. My favorite character, Anthony Quinn as the productive, no-nonsense Gaugin.

                    Comments about this product:

A beautiful film. It really does portray a great deal of turmoil in Van Gogh, and his need for love. Made me want to read more about famous painters, and go to the art museum again. May see some of his paintings with new appreciation.
