As author Gustave Flaubert, James Mason provides opening and closing narration for this sumptuous screen adaptation, directed with panache by Vincente Minnelli. Jennifer Jones plays the titular 19th-Century social climber who, after marrying Van Johnson's unassuming doctor, finds herself increasingly bored and dissatisfied with her situation. Seeking both excitement and social advancement, Bovary enters into a string of ill-advised affairs with various aristocrats, a course of action that ultimately leads to her downfall.
