Gert Bahner conducts the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in this lavish production of Mozart's opera. Set in Egypt near the Temple of Isis around the time of Pharaoh Ramses I, "The Magic Flute" is considered to be one of his finest operas, which he wrote just before he died at the age of 35. The story is a fairy tale and love story, with good and evil personified on stage. The magical flute has the power to ward off wild animals, raging fires and torrential waters. The brilliant score melds German folk songs, subtle French orchestrations, and raucous Italian wit with classical operatic music and spoken dialogue.
