Barbara Stanwyck stars as ambitious news journalist Ann Mitchell, who is fired by the paper's new owners in "Meet John Doe" (1941). Determined to resurrect her job, Mitchell contrives a scheme in her last days at the paper. She prints a fraudulent suicide note which she claims was delivered by an anonymous John Doe. His angst will end on Christmas Eve when he kills himself, and public support immediately pours in. In a secret plan, Mitchell's boss recruits an unemployed man (Gary Cooper) to impersonate Doe, who woos the public.
