A man sent "up the river" is given a choice between death and salvation in this gritty prison picture. As a well-meaning chaplain, Charles Bickford tries to steer check-forger Johnny - sensitively performed by Dennis Moore - towards the straight and narrow. Meanwhile, Moore's bunkmate Red - a glowering Barton Maclane - readying a jailbreak gives Johnny a choice: Either get with the breakout or face extermination.
