HMS Bounty sails for Tahiti by way of Cape Horn... and into movie lore as an American Film Institute Top-100 American Films selection. Grandly filmed, Mutiny on the Bounty captured the 1935 Best Picture Academy Award and eight nominations total. Charles Laughton portrays Captain Bligh, a seafaring monster ruling with the law of fear.

Solidifying his status as Hollywood's #1 male star, Clark Gable is first officer Fletcher Christian, whose will to obey erodes under Bligh's tyranny. And Franchot Tone plays idealistic midshipman Byam, torn by his allegiance to both. T hat all three portrayals are vividly memorable is accented by the fact that for the only time in Oscar history, three stars from the same film were Best Actor nominees.

    Comments about this product:

This is a historical drama of a 1935 Black & White movie of the "Mutiny on the Bounty", starring Charles Laughton as Captain Bligh and Clark Gable as Fletcher Christian with Francot Tone as midshipman Byam who recorded Tihiti language. All 3 actors were Oscar nominees and won Oscar for Best Picture.

I wish to define this movie, the captain aroused his fellow sailors to mutiny through excessive punishment! Anybody with respect for others would not inflict with excessive zeal death for a minor infraction of duty! Now, you can understand the 18th century English sailing rule for non-readers of history.

Plus, understand old English society. If you come from aristocracy, but non-first born son, he must earn a living. That was Fletcher. Bligh made it to captain through ability and determination, the rare non-aristocrat.

To interrupt, I wish to denounce the 1962 movie remake in color portrayed by Trevor Howard as Captain Bligh and especially Marlon Brando portrayed Fletcher as a society dandy fop. A "fop" meant a man who cared about being well dressed to the highest fashion. A dandy meant being seen with the most fashionable society. Marlon versus Captain comes off as a unsatisfied bad guy and Trevor as a good leader guy. I think the first version was correct, because England changed their naval rules and regulations after the mutiny.

I want you to understand another culture before calling the Tahiti women ugly names!!! Current men will call ugly names of these women. But, they must prove that they can produce babies before any man will marry them, their culture. After Captain Cook's visit, the half "white" babies were favored for some ODD reason. So, the visit by the Bounty for "Breadfruit" was a big welcome.

The ship tried going around Cape Horn and finally had to take the African/Asian route. Much time was lost and the botanist said the trees were resting. Then the stupid captain did not bring enough water abound for the plants. Rationing WATER one week from port! Explosion.

If you never read history, this is it ultimate in making it come alive to viewers. As a viewer, I too revolted against the brutality and no water!
