In this time-twisting, gender-bending 1992 indie film by filmmaker Sally Potter, Tilda Swinton plays the androgynous, sex-switching character from Virginia Woolf's 1928 novel. The story explores centuries of sexual politics as seen through the eyes of the immortal main character, Orlando. Through relationships with Queen Elizabeth I, played by Quentin Crisp, and the daughter of a Russian diplomat, Sasha, played by Charlotte Valandrey, a return to England after a sex change in Constantinople, and finally, a 19th century romance in America with Billy Zane as an American hunk, ending in a 20th century birth, this visually spectacular adventure goes and goes . . .
