In his first starring role, Ian McKellen ("Lord of the Rings") brings to life the struggles of controversial novelist D.H. Lawrence to escape the scandal caused by his sex-charged novels and get on with his life. Through troubled relations with his wife and travels in the U.S. and Latin America, he battles with his muse, his sexuality and his future. Janet Suzman (1971's "Nicholas and Alexander") co-stars as the tempestuous Frieda Lawrence, with Ava Gardner as arts patron Mabel Dodge Luhan, Penelope Keith ("To the Manor Born") as artist Dorothy Brett, John Gielgud and Sarah Miles.
