1940 marked a high point in Ginger Rogers’ career: it was the year of Kitty Foyle, which would earn her a Best Actress Academy Award®. Rogers made another exceptional drama that year: this overlooked gem that pushed boundaries with its (for the time) frank view of prostitution. Rogers plays dreamer Ellie May Adams, whose mother supports her squalid family by selling herself. Ellie May marries an upstanding man (Joel McCrea) without revealing her background. But her secret gets out. Rogers shines as the innocent raised amid corruption, Marjorie Rambeau earned an Oscar nomination* as the good-time ma and Queenie Vassar steals scenes as acid-tongued Grandma, who’d go back on the game if anyone would pay her.

    Comments about this product:

Ginger Rogers away from Fred Astaire. This is a movie to watch and enjoy. She now earned an Oscar for doing drama. I love this movie and finally it at a sale.

Ginger Rogers knows her mother supports the family by entertaining men. She is a virgin. She meets Joel McCrea at the seashore digging for clams. He is nice, but the ride from seashore to town is a rough ride. A cop stops him, she gives up his wallet to save him.

At home, she gets all dressed up borrowing the best from her mother and grandmother. Her mother knows she fell for some dude. A nice mother/daughter talk. Ginger goes after Joel in a bar. Somehow she convinces him to have pity on her.

The next scene is they are married and both working at his job. A combination gas station and cafe. She learns quickly that repartee is necessary. They are in love and everything is wonderful.

One day her mother is giving Joel a bad time with the hoses while he refueling a vehicle. Everybody in the cafe is laughing. Ginger takes it badly.

The boss, Henry Travers, listens to her truth. He advises her to come clean and meet her family. She invites Joel, advising the family ahead. Grandma and very young sister are not cordial and her father showing up very drunk spoils everything. Joel takes off!

After some long time, Joel shows up after her mother was killed and father is dead. Plus, a recruiter has the digs into her to become a male entertainer.

On her first trip in her job, she stops at the bar and gives Joel a special bad time. Joel and the man dating her tonight talk, he is a shy sweet timer.

I will let you guess the rest. I adore this movie and and watch it at least a few times per year.
