    Comments about this product:

This is a 1942 Adventure movie starring Paulette Goddard. Her costars were John Wayne and Ray Milland. Some supporting cast was Susan Hayward, Raymond Massey and Charles Bickford.

Paulette is a wildcat that goes out with her captain to recover goods and people on wrecked sailing ships in Key West. She is not a typical young woman of 1840 that stays home wearing hooped skirts, she dons pants and learns the a man's trade of savaging.

She saves John Wayne's life and gives him her bed to recover from his injuries. She even rescues John's pet monkey. She falls desperately in love with him.

Her mother decides to send Paulette to Charleston, SC to her aunt for civilized and cultured manners for a proper lady. She scandalizes society by singing a rough sailor song, but captured Ray Milland's interest. She allows him to court her, because he is powerful enough to give John command of a new stream vessel. She tries to run away with John, but Ray throws Paulette in the harbor.

They all return to Key West. Susan Hayward finally admits she is desperately in love with Robert Preston; brother to the notorious pirate of savaging against the law. Meanwhile, again Paulette saves both John and Ray against Raymond Massey (pirate). What a scene of slugging it out fight!

Paulette and John discover Ray was carrying orders for naming next the company's steamship captain. Somehow, John took the news badly, he contacts Massey. John will wreck his ship on the coral shoals around the island. I did not understand this scene, an ethical man go bad because of slow delivery of new company's orders. John should have blown off his anger on alcoholic drink instead.

Meanwhile, Susan returned to Cuba according to her mother's orders. She wants to get back to Key West. She stowaways aboard John's ship. She the ship is dying, Susan screams. The crew think the shipped screamed, a ship and woman is the same voice, both she.

Next, there is a trial of the steamship. The judge interrupts it to investigate by underwater divers. Both accused John and prosecutor Ray dive. Massey wants them to die before evidence can submerge, he knows he is guilty! Then, a giant squid attacks.

You have to watch to ending. I will give away one clue, Susan died and Robert turns against his brother, Massey. Just to make you comfortable about one detail.

Who does Paulette marry? Who is convicted of crime? Who survives the squid attack? This is also action movie for boys. This is a romance for girls. It covers three genres for me. It is listed as drama.
